The newest ambitious project from Tesla is the all-electric Model Y compact crossover. Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk touted a driving range of up to 300 miles and a zero-to-60-mph time of as little as 3.5 seconds when he unveiled the Model Y during a live streamed event in March. The 2020 Tesla Model Y looks very similar to the compact Model 3 sedan but can be outfitted with a third row of seats for a total seating capacity of seven. But let's be honest folks, only small people will fit there.
In front is a clean, centrally mounted, horizontally oriented 15-inch floating touchscreen, similar to the one found in the Model 3. In fact, the Model Y's interior appears to be lifted straight out of the Model 3 sedan. This makes sense, as the 3 and Y are supposed to be the most affordable Teslas yet, and one tried and true way to gain cost efficiency is through parts sharing. The rest of the interior is clean and tidy; the center console has a couple of cupholders and an armrest that's also a storage compartment. Wood and leather trim give it all a premium feel, but we're curious how the entry-level Model Y will present.
Like the Model 3, the 2020 Model Y will eventually be available in the cost-leader Standard Range trim, but the first variants to launch will be the Long Range and Performance models. Long Range models can be fitted with either rear- or all-wheel drive; all-wheel drive is standard on the Model Y Performance. The Performance model will offer slightly less range (280 miles versus 300, according to Tesla), but it comes with 20-inch wheels, a lowered suspension, a higher top speed (150 mph), and a dedicated Track mode. When the Standard Range variant becomes available, buyers can expect a driving range of about 230 miles.
It feels like a fishbowl inside. With the huge panoramic moonroof and large side windows, the Tesla Model Y has a sense of freedom. The seats feel like they're positioned a little bit higher, reminding me of the ride height of the Jaguar I-Pace—not too high, but not too close to the ground.
The price starts at 39.000, The $47,000 long-range Model Y will come first in the fall of 2020, and it will have a range of 300 miles.
